There are a few things a big summer hit needs: a great beat, Spanish influences and of course a sultry video with half naked and stunning ladies. All summer hits, from the popular Summer of 69 (out of the 1980s) to the mega hit Bailando in 2018 are played endlessly and create that sultry summer feeling. These are the biggest summer hits ever.
These are the biggest summer hits of the 80's
Let’s start with the eighties, just because yours truly was born in 1984. For the first decade of this list, I have therefore delved into lists compiled by slightly older writers. Wham! took us to Club Tropicana in 1983, where the drinks were free and where you could suntan all you need. Kaoma's Lambada was the last big summer hit at the end of the 80’s, and after seeing the video, everyone tried to dance this dance from Bahia, Brazil. But first there was La Bamba by Los Lobos, a big hit in the summer of 1987.
Summer hits in the 90s
In the early 90's the Fresh Prince (Will Smith) and DJ Jazzy Jeff scored a huge hit in the summer with the very appropriate named song Summertime. One of the biggest summer hits ever is the Macarena from Los del Rio. This song out of the year 1993, came complete with a little dance that everyone in their 30’s remembers. From that moment on, most summer hits came with a dance. Yet Peter Andre did it differently with Mysterious Girl in 1995: he mainly relied on this good looks, including his rock-hard six-pack. The Dutch group T-Spoon, with the hit Sex on the Beach, was also accompanied by a cheerful dance routine. That same summer, Barbie and Ken from Aqua sang in a pink world about their "life in plastic, it's fantastic". As a teenager, I was very happy to do every little dance I saw in video’s and really, I am not ashamed to say that I still know most of the summer hit dances mentioned. If not all.
Summer hits from the 2000s
Like I said before: a summer hit was not a summer hit if it did not have a quircky little dance. In 2000 Jody Bernal had a huge with the cheerful Que sí que no. That same year Summer Jam (how appropriate) by The Underdog Project topped the charts. Las Ketchup with The Ketchup Song was also in the top 40 for weeks, complete with waving hands dance. In 2012, Gusttavo Lima sang to us in Portuguese with his song Balada, while Michel Teló had a cheerful hit with Ai Se Eu Te Pego a year earlier. In 2012 K-pop also became known in the Netherlands, through the song Gangnam Style of Psy. It’s a very popular music style, though not in our country.
The biggest recent summer hits
Most big summer hits in recent years have been (partly) Spanish. Enrique Iglesias is the Summer Hit King. He scored a top song with Nicky Jam, called El Perdón, in 2017. In 2014 he already scored high with the song Bailando, a collaboration with Sean Paul and in Spanish-English. However, nothing can match the success of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. In 2017 they scored a monster hit with their song Despacito. Luis Fonsi has earned no less than seven Guinness World Records in regards to this hit, including the most liked photo online and best viewed video online. The song was number one for 16 weeks and became extra popular when a remix with Justin Bieber was released. If you are ambitious enough that you want to score a summer hit, now you know what the main ingredients are.
